Industrial & Performance Machining (formerly Machine Tool Technology)
96 Hours
Program Description
This program is designed for adults who are interested in entering the machine tool trade. This course introduces basic skills and mathematics related to machine shop theory. The class is a mixture of lecture and practical shop experience where students gain the necessary skills to enter the industry. This program was developed to address the current and anticipated need for machinists in specialty machine shops across the region as well as in companies engaged in advanced manufacturing. Local employers designed the program in collaboration with the Saratoga-Warren-Washington Workforce Development Board and WSWHE BOCES.
Students receive comprehensive, hands-on training in precision machining and advanced manufacturing practices. Instruction includes machine shop theory, blueprint reading, precision measurement, shop mathematics, metallurgy, tooling, quality control, and manufacturing processes. Students develop the ability to safely set up and operate manual milling machines and lathes, perform machining calculations, and inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, problem-solving, attention to detail, and industry-standard safety practices within a modern machine shop environment.
Throughout the program, students build both technical proficiency and workplace readiness skills through structured classroom instruction and extensive shop-based application. The training is designed to reflect real-world manufacturing environments and prepare students to meet employer expectations in high-demand industrial settings.
Program Outcome
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are prepared for entry-level employment as machinists, machine operators, CNC operators, and manufacturing technicians in precision machining and advanced manufacturing industries. Students earn the HAAS Basic Mill Operator Certification and HAAS Basic Lathe Operator Certification, validating their skills and readiness to enter the workforce or pursue advanced technical training in CNC machining and related manufacturing pathways.
