Program Description:

The Automotive Technology program provides students with a hands-on foundation in automotive repair and maintenance through four progressive modules covering shop safety, tools and equipment, engine fundamentals, electrical systems, and steering, suspension, brakes, and alignments. Students develop industry-aligned skills in safety practices, diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and the use of professional tools and service information systems. Each module builds on the previous one, allowing students to earn stackable certificates that recognize growing technical competency. Upon completion of all four modules, students earn the Automotive Technician Foundations Certificate, preparing them for entry-level employment in the automotive industry or continued training toward ASE-aligned and manufacturer certification pathways. 

 

Program Outcome

Upon completion, students demonstrate entry-level competencies aligned with ASE Education Foundation industry standards, reflecting the knowledge and skills expected of entry-level automotive technicians.

Module Information: 

 

Auto Technology Module I of IV: Automotive Shop Safety, Tools and Equipment

 

This module introduces students to the foundational skills and safety practices required in an automotive shop environment. Students will learn proper professional shop safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling of chemicals, and Hazardous Waste Management/SPCC procedures. Training also includes identification and proper use of common hand and power tools, safe vehicle lifting and hoisting procedures using 2-post and 4-post lifts, and the use of precision measuring tools such as micrometers and dial indicators. Students will also gain experience navigating automotive service information systems.

By the end of this module, students will have learned to:

  • Demonstrate proper automotive shop safety procedures and practices
  • Safely perform vehicle lifting and hoisting operations
  • Properly use precision measuring tools and equipment
  • Identify and respond to common shop hazards
  • Demonstrate safe and professional use of automotive tools and equipment

Automotive Shop Safety & Foundations Certificate

Prepares students for entry-level shop support roles focused on safety, tools, equipment handling, and foundational automotive practices.

Auto Technology Module II of IV: Engine Fundamentals

This module provides students with foundational knowledge and hands-on experience related to automotive engine systems and routine maintenance procedures. Students will study the operation of the 4-stroke internal combustion engine, including the functions of cooling and lubrication systems. Training also includes oil and filter service procedures, inspection and maintenance of drive belts, hoses, and vehicle fluids, as well as introductory visual and mechanical engine diagnostic techniques. Emphasis is placed on proper service procedures, preventive maintenance practices, and developing efficiency within industry standards.

By the end of this module, students will have learned to:

  • Perform a full Multi-Point Inspection (MPI)
  • Complete an oil and filter service following proper industry procedures
  • Demonstrate routine vehicle maintenance practices
  • Identify basic engine system components and functions
  • Perform maintenance tasks within established industry time standards

Prerequisite: Automotive Technology Module I or written employer recommendation.

Completion of Modules I-II:

Automotive Service Support Specialist Certificate

Prepares students for entry-level automotive shop roles focused on safety, tools, equipment use, and basic preventive maintenance support tasks.

Auto Technology Module III of IV: Fundamentals of Electricity

This module introduces students to the foundational principles of automotive electrical systems and diagnostic procedures. Students will develop an understanding of basic electrical theory, including Ohm’s Law and Watts, while gaining hands-on experience using a Digital Multimeter (DMM) for testing and troubleshooting. Training includes battery testing, charging, and maintenance procedures, as well as diagnostics related to starting and charging systems. Students will also learn basic lighting and fuse circuit repair techniques and prepare for Electrical 1, 2, and 3 certification competencies. Emphasis is placed on safe electrical testing practices, diagnostic accuracy, and proper use of automotive electrical equipment.

By the end of this module, students will have learned to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic automotive electrical theory
  • Safely operate and use a Digital Multimeter (DMM)
  • Perform battery testing, charging, and maintenance procedures
  • Diagnose basic starting and charging system concerns
  • Identify and repair basic lighting and fuse circuit issues
  • Apply troubleshooting techniques to common automotive electrical problems
  • Demonstrate safe and professional electrical diagnostic practices

This course provides the opportunity to take Electrical 1, 2 and 3 certifications.  

Prerequisite: Automotive Technology Module II or written employer recommendation.

Completion of Modules I-III:

Automotive Maintenance & Electrical Technician Certificate

Prepares students for foundational automotive technician roles involving preventive maintenance, engine fundamentals, and basic electrical system diagnostics and repair.

Auto Technology Module IV of IV: Steering, Suspension, Brakes and Alignments

This module introduces students to the core systems involved in vehicle steering, suspension, braking, and wheel alignment. Students will gain knowledge of brake system components, including disc and drum brake systems, as well as suspension geometry and related hardware such as shocks, struts, and bushings. Instruction also includes tire service procedures, including mounting, balancing, and TPMS resets, along with an introduction to wheel alignment theory (caster, camber, and toe). Students will also prepare for tire and wheel certification competencies. Emphasis is placed on safe service practices, accurate measurements, and proper use of equipment.

By the end of this module, students will have learned to:

  • Identify and describe brake system components (disc and drum systems)
  • Understand suspension components and basic geometry
  • Perform tire mounting, balancing, and TPMS reset procedures
  • Explain basic wheel alignment angles (caster, camber, and toe)
  • Apply safe tire and wheel service practices
  • Demonstrate proper use of brake and tire service equipment
  • Perform basic inspection and measurement procedures on braking systems

This course provides the opportunity to take a Tire/Wheel certification.  

Prerequisite: Auto III or written employer recommendation.

Completion of Modules I-IV:

Automotive Systems Technician Certificate

Prepares students for entry-level technician roles working across major vehicle systems including engines, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspension, and alignments.
