Driver Education Program
The Fall session is full. Please check back for Spring dates in the upcoming weeks.
This Driver Education Program is for students 16 and older.
This course leads to an MV-278 (5 hour pre-license requirement) and the NYS MV-285. The MV-285 qualifies students for an unrestricted license at age 17 and eligibility for an insurance discount for 3 years.
Attendance is extremely important. On average, students must attend 90 minutes of classroom instruction and 90 minutes of supervised driving every week to comply with New York State DMV regulations.
This 48-hour non-credit Driver Education program is designed to teach students proper driving skills, safe habits, and responsible participation in the highway transportation system. The course includes:
-
24 hours of classroom instruction
-
24 hours of concurrent in-car instruction
-
6 hours behind the wheel
-
18 hours of observation
-
Successful completion of this course may satisfy the NYS 5-hour pre-licensing course requirement.
Please note:
This course is not intended as the sole preparation for the road test. The NYS DMV requires at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice in addition to this program.
Attendance Requirements
To comply with New York State DMV regulations and receive the MV-285 certificate, students must complete all 24 classroom hours and 24 in-car hours. Attendance is extremely important.
-
Students may miss a maximum of 2 classroom sessions and 2 in-car sessions.
-
Any missed class must be reported to the instructor before the session, and students must attend one of the scheduled make-up sessions listed below.
-
Students who exceed allowable absences or do not attend make-up sessions will be ineligible to receive the MV-285 certificate.
-
If school is closed for weather or emergencies, the instructor will reschedule the session.
If a student’s extracurricular or personal schedule will prevent consistent attendance, we strongly encourage enrolling in a future session.
