Abad was one of 20 students statewide to receive the honor, which celebrates outstanding adult education students for their perseverance, growth and impact on their communities.
Nominated by instructor Shazima Gillani, Abad was selected for his dedication to his education and his positive influence in the classroom. A resident of Cossayuna, New York, Abad balances working overnight shifts at Amazon with attending morning classes more than an hour from his home.
Abad enrolled in the WSWHE BOCES High School Equivalency Program in 2025 after leaving high school in the 10th grade to support his family during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since returning to his studies, he has strengthened his academic skills and is on track to earn his GED diploma this spring.
“Education is the key that unlocks the golden door to freedom,” the Student of the Year Committee wrote in a statement recognizing this year’s honorees. The committee noted that recipients demonstrate determination, resilience and a commitment to growth that creates a ripple effect in their families, workplaces and communities.
Abad’s instructor described him as a conscientious and motivated student who consistently brings a positive attitude to class despite the demands of his work schedule. He is known for his punctuality, willingness to help peers and respect for both classmates and staff.
Beyond academics, Abad’s character stands out in everyday moments. After winning an attendance raffle twice, he chose to give the prize to another student, reflecting the generosity and maturity that have made him a role model among his peers.
Through the program, Abad has rediscovered a passion for learning and plans to continue his education by pursuing a degree in electrical engineering.
The conference also featured keynote speaker Trent Griffin-Braaf, an entrepreneur and workforce development advocate whose work focuses on creating opportunities for individuals facing barriers to employment.
This year’s theme, “Making Waves in Adult Education - Together We Rise,” highlighted the transformative impact of adult education and the achievements of students like Abad, whose perseverance continues to inspire those around them.
